I bought an AR 15 this weekend - Smith and Wesson M&P15 Sport, 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem. It has a flat top (meaning no carry handle) with Picatinny rail, 6-position telescopic butt stock, 16" Barrel with 1 in 8" twist, (M16)A2 front sight tower, and it even came with a Magpul MBUS folding rear sight and 1 Magpul PMAG magazine.

One thing Smith and Wesson did with this gun to keep the cost down, was to leave off the ejection port dust cover, as well as the forward assist. All the time I've been around M16's, I cannot remember needing to use the forward assist. And dust covers were normally only closed when the rifles were stored.

It has a solid/fixed trigger guard but the trigger well is enlarged so a gloved finger fits inside without issue.

I plan on replacing the front sight tower with a low-profile gas block with Picatinny rail, topped with a Magpul MBUS Front Sight. I also plan on replacing the standard hand guards with drop-in carbine-length quad rails.
